Faber-Castell Improves Efficiency in Warehouse Distribution With Speech Solution From Psion Teklogix

The Challenge:

Faber-Castell, a leading manufacturer of high-quality products for writing, colouring, and creative design, required a solution for its warehouse distribution centre that delivered higher efficiency while reducing manual labour and unnecessary warehouse movement.

  • Initially, Faber-Castell’s warehouse management system (WMS) would print out either tickets with pick lists or replenishment requests for workers to retrieve at a central location in each distribution center.
  • However, such an approach was far from ideal: workers would frequently misread tickets or neglect to fill entire orders, resulting in low order accuracy and periodic selection of the wrong products.
  • Paper checklists and stickers to pick items and manual data entry decreased productivity within the distribution centre.

The Solution:

  • Faber-Castell implemented a speech-directed solution from Psion Teklogix.
  • Employees at the warehouse were equipped with Talkman T5 devices attached to their belt.
  • Using the terminal, employees sign into the system and then interact via voice commands. Each employee is directed to their specific picking location and then is told which packages to pick. All actions are confirmed via voice commands.

The Benefits:

  • Significant reduction in cycle times (order picking) and improved order accuracy
  • Increased productivity and throughput
  • Reduced employee training time
  • Reduced commissioning process by 50 per cent
