(MEDITECH) is a software and services company serving the health care community. Based in Westwood, Massachusetts, it offers a series of clinical, financial and administrative applications for use in the acute care, post-acute care, and ambulatory care settings. In business since 1969, the company employs over 2,000 people and had revenues of $256 million (US) in 2002.
The Challenge:
- MEDITECH’s customers must balance enhancing service and quality with improving the financial bottom line
- Many healthcare organizations use pen and paper-based systems to manage supplies
- Pen and paper-based systems are costly, labour-intensive and error-prone
- MEDITECH wanted to offer customers a solution around an automated barcode-based inventory control
The Solution:
- MEDITECH now offers its customers AMTSystems’ Materials Management (MatMan) software for inventory control in central stores and nurses’ station carts.
- Data is collected on the Psion Teklogix devices and uploaded via a terminal or PC.
- MEDITECH currently has more than 600 handheld computers installed at its clients’ places of business.
The Benefits:
- Improved inventory control in central stores and nurses’ station carts for MEDITECH’s customers
- Barcoding products enables automation of inputting and collecting transaction data
- Elimination of handwritten documents and subsequent manual keystrokes has created productivity gains as well as a near 100% accuracy level
- New system enables users to effectively monitor inventory levels and replenish stock easily, promptly and accurately by inputting barcodes available on products and shelf locations
- All purchasing, supply utilization, and pricing information is tracked efficiently in the inventory control to reduce costs, and risk management is enhanced through the ability to share data between integrated systems.
- MEDITECH has also benefited from having superior customer satisfaction. Its healthcare customers experience a broad range of benefits using barcode technology including:
- improved quality of patient care
- increased accuracy in gathering data
- enhanced staff productivity and morale, and eliminated health issues, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, from the automation of tedious manual repetitive tasks.
