Leading UK Energy Supplier Increases Productivity with an Upgrade to Ikôn

RWE npower is one of the United Kingdom’s largest energy suppliers. It generates electricity and supplies gas, electricity and other related services to around 6.6 million customers through its retail business. Vital to their Energy Service operations are the handheld devices used by their team of mobile field engineers for meter reading and meter installation.

The Challenge

  • npower required an upgrade to its handheld devices in order to keep mission critical field service operations running
  • the energy supplier wanted devices that were user-friendly, ergonomic, and packed with functionality, but above all, the chosen devices needed to be rugged enough to cope with the harsh conditions of field service
  • the devices also required GPRS capability for simple data communication
  • any solution that npower decided on needed to come with a fully managed support and maintenance contract


The Solution

  • npower selected a solution from Psion Teklogix in partnership with Ryzex.
  • For its meter reading activities, npower equipped its mobile field engineers with 900 rugged Ikôn PDAs from Psion Teklogix.  
  • Ryzex provided a comprehensive service agreement that included a five year maintenance contract run from its UK-based repair facility.  
  • The Ikôn was selected by npower for a number of reasons:
    • Ruggedness - Ikôn has an IP65 rating – making it water resistant – and it has an integrated antenna to protect it from breaking when dropped
    • Functionality - Ikôn packages an incredible amount of functionality into a compact form with class-leading ergonomics and aesthetics
    • User-Friendly - Ikôn features a large VGA screen that can handle applications with sophisticated graphics and can be read in all lighting conditions
    • Battery Life - Ikôn features a high capacity battery that enables full-day productivity by npower’s mobile workers.
