Cardiff Council Upgrades Waste & Recycling Manager System With Help From Ikôn

Cardiff Council’s Waste Management department oversees 140,000 households in the capital city of Wales.  It is continuously evaluating its Waste & Recycling Manager System (WRMS) to find ways to improve the quality and quantity of recyclable materials gathered by its refuse collectors.

“The Psion Ikôn is the ideal rugged PDA for our WRMS. It is feature packed yet is the most robust industrial PDA on the market, having an IP65 rating. It also has the highest battery life currently available on the market, which is essential for practical use in the field.” - Andrew Halse, Managing Director of Waste Recycling Solutions Ltd

The Challenge:

  • Cardiff Council wanted to improve quality and quantity of recyclable materials collected by educating households on related health & safety issues
  • It required a solution that enabled refuse collectors to track waste & recycling and provide educational information to residents relating to issues

The Solution:

  • Cardiff Council implemented a fully automated bin barcoding system from Waste & Recycling Solutions Ltd. (WRS), a partner of Psion
  • Workers are equipped with Psion Ikôns, rugged PDAs configured with built-in barcode scanner, colour camera, and phone
  • Ikôns link directly with Cardiff Council’s WRMS via GPRS, which enables automated task scheduling for home visits, inspections, and more
  • Refuse collectors record issues on Ikôn and information is sent back to central database where educational letters are printed and sent to offenders
  • The WRMS stores all issues, actions, tasks, and letters with date and time so necessary future actions, such as issuing penalty notices, can be taken

The Benefits:

  • Decrease in health & safety issues related to overloading and side waste
  • Improved health & safety for residents and collection operators
  • Better able to meet recycling targets since issues and repeat offenders can be monitored
  • Reduced operational costs due to overall increase in efficiency
